Umoja translates to “solidarity” in Swahili. This lot, called “Umoja Batwa,” grows in South Kivu and is a product of the hard work of 105 Batwa Pygmies smallholder farmers. These farmers are organized under the Umoja Cooperative. It is Certified Fairtrade-Organic cooperatives like this one who have helped provide stability in the coffee sector in a region that is often fraught with coffee smuggling. For many of the members, coffee is a key source of income and helps promote rights for marginalized groups.

This lot was brought to us by Mighty Peace Coffee. They are women and minority- owned social impact coffee company based in the U.S. with offices in Europe and Africa. Mighty Peace was born out of the Congolese Peace Movement by an international team of business leaders, coffee experts and innovators, community organizers, and human rights defenders.

Mighty Peace believes that a company which prioritizes love of humanity, the health of the planet, and service to communities will transform the industry and world, leaving a legacy we can be proud of. Currently they are serving 9,000 farmers in the Democratic Republic of Congo by delivering high quality specialty coffee to 84 U.S. coffee companies in 24 states.

Having this lot be selected from a much smaller community means we get a much more specific expression of the Umoja coffee flavor profile. It is because of this, and the exceptional farming and processing practices of these farmers, that we taste notes such as ripe apricot, sweet lemon, and a floral and savory finish that reminds us of Genmaicha tea.
